Alongside Ayres and Eleven Cosmo Baker makes up the mighty triumverate of DJ's known as the The Rub Since 2003 they have been doing the hip hop/80's/electro/funk/dance hall/smidge of indie mix up that we all take for granted now. If you haven't been to one of their parties get on it. This 'summer mix' (EVERYONE has one I tell ya) by Cosmo is a real throughful departure from one of his typical sets. Quincy Jones, Archie Whitewater, Shuggie... It's def one for the 'it's so goddamn hot I'm not leaving my house all day' kind of days. I know LA and NYC have been waaaay hotter then usual this week so enjoy. (Sorry LDN.. you get a bank holiday soon, hold tight)

Tony Wilson, one the great figures in popular music history died Friday at the age of 57. The first music that drew me out of the Top 40 woods as a kid was entirely from Manchester- Stone Roses, New Order, Joy Divsion, Happy Mondays, The Smiths... So to me the man that made Factory, The Hacienda and gave Peter Saville the free reign to become a ground breaking album art designer was my music industry hero. He was truly 'Manchester' never once moving to London. I had the pleasure to see him host several talks and make the rounds at the In The City conference (again his creation) and he was every bit the legend that preceded him. He was a total one off.
Paul Morley said it best in this obituary from the Guardian
"To some extent, even if he did say so himself, this compelling, unique hybrid of selfish visionary, TV hack, charming bully, generous tyrant, commissioning editor, playful philosopher, inconsistent genius and down-to-earth intellectual regenerated a declining city both economically and culturally"

Over the last few weeks I've been asked that ubiquitous question 'What you been listening to lately?' more then usual. Even though I listen to music most of the day, this question usually leaves me drawing a blank for reasons I can't explain. So,I gave it some more thought, consulted the 'most played' column of my iTunes and posted this for you. These are the 'stand-by's of the last few months. Atmosphere just released one of their 'Sad Clown' EP's. The offerings for fans are usually available at shows and full of rare bits and pieces that didn't find a home on their albums.
Check the track they made available for download, 'Sunshine'. Basically Ant and Slugs take on 'Summertime' by Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince. Instead of flexing their cars and new sneakers, they're just reveling in their still vaguely youthful ability to shake a bad hangover and appreciate the little things that seem special in subsequence... butterflies, little kids, your bike...Happy Summer!

Look another remix!

From what I gather Al Usher is sort of a super Robin to Ewan Pearson's techno Batman. Pearson of course is the don of the smarty pants tech house remix. The kind of music educated graphic designers loose their expensive t-shirts over. He also co-produced the last Rapture album which was a mighty fine effort. About a year back Usher and Pearson paired together as 'Partial Arts' and released an album of quiet electronic goodness on Kompakt (they do no wrong- try them)
Over the last couple of months I've come across these remixes from Usher. The Camille remix is just some pretty stuff. The Winehouse mix gets an official release as a UK B-Side this month and would probably blow your mind if you'd never heard the original and had no interest in hand claps and horn sections.

Al Usher's new EP is just out on Misericordings (Ewan Pearson's label- full circle kids!) and it's very summery and Euro in a driving late at night when you shouldn't be way. Buy it from my third favorite record store in London, If

I first heard Wale last year on the aforementioned East Village Radio show of Ronson's. Think it was a demo remix of Smile he rapped over the top of. Now he's on tour with Ronson's band as the defacto MC. I mean he's no match for ODB's part on Toxic, but who would be really? Much better with his own stuff... He's from D.C so it's a bit boom bappy, some slooow shit, him rapping over D.A.N.C.E ... All mixed by another favorite of mine Nick Catchdubs

I've always had a lot of love for Mark Ronson. For someone that was basically born with a pretentious free pass he's relatively low key. I didn't give him much credit 'til I saw him DJ at Spa in like... oh shit 1998 and thought 'damn.. he's actually a GOOD DJ' - He continues to hold it down in New York every week on his East Village Radio show which is pretty impeccable.
I was living in London when his first album came out and bought the 'Oooh Wee' 12" to play at a Carnival party. I loved it loads and thought it was Top 40 heaven. Guess the US radio gods didn't agree since it went just about nowhere here. Check the video..Now that he's all bedhead and Fred Perry pretty funny to see him in his mid-20's down with the Shaolin phase.
Versions is out this week.. finally someone that likes Brit Pop and Hip Hop in as equal measure as myself... buyitbuyitbuyitbuyit.

Pink Plastik and I saw Snowden at the Ex-Plex 'soft opening' some months back. I think we concurred that the smell of the fresh paint drying was more interesting.
Then I heard this remix from Le Castle Vania. Ohhhhhhhhhweeeeeeeeeee! Love it.

Sea Level wasn't my favorite record store, (Nigel at Rough Trade Notting Hill! Miss you and your weird ability to read my musical mind) but certainly my favorite in LA. It was the very first place I was taken when I arrived in the city(airports don't count)and most of the CD's I've bought since living here came from there. Admittedly I didn't go to often and lot of the time they wouldn't have what I was looking for so I'd buy something weird I didn't even like. I was eventually told the store motto was something along the lines of 'get use to being disappointed' (which when you think about about it could serve as a particularly pessimistic life motto as well) In any case it was a nice little joint and I'll miss it being there for sure. But the nature of city life should surely have taught us this lesson now.. enough bars and cafes, shops and theaters die a untimely death. (Halcyon Brooklyn, All of Ludlow Street..) Things pop up to take their place and we get use to moving on.
If you are in LA go to their Irish wake of a party on Friday. Here's a track from the Switch who are a jaunty local bunch that are playing. The second track is from the Elvis Perkins album 'Mayday', the last album I bought at Sea Level. (and could more people get into this guy please.. the definition of a sleeper if ever I heard one)

When I was a borderline alcoholic with a negative bank balance living alone in London in the summer of 1996 there was two kinds of music that defined the city for me. "Brit Pop" at its unquestionable peak (Blur Vs Oasis on national news) and Drum n Bass. I would trawl the pubs in Camden,come home, turn on the radio and hear it late night on Radio 1. It was the UK equivalent of NYC and hip hop. It was on the radio, coming out of cars and late night parties. There was harder stuff around to be sure but for that hot broke summer this music is my biggest memory. That and watching several grown men cry as Gareth Southgate missed a penalty against Germany knocking England out of Euro 1996.

I know LTJ and MC Conrad are still kicking around but this is a set in their UK big club prime. If you only have one DnB mix on the pod make it this. A little piece of summer in an MP3.

They are aging gracefully and this is a damn fine single from their new album. Kind of shouty but pretty, romantic and defiant with a dash of politics...Nina from the Cardigans duets.. Admittedly, I only listened to and posted this mix because of the name. (good job on the imaging guys) But, if you do indeed, feel like getting some old classic house on check it. When's the last time you cranked 'Bad Boy' by Frankie Knuckles? Probably never unless you had a gay best friend in college when you were young and could still do drugs and go to clubs without a feeling of black doom invading you on Monday.

I am about to enter Week 2 of my utterly inexplicable addiction to the latest Kaiser Chiefs album 'Yours Truly Angry Mob'. They aren't that imaginative or artistic. They aren't very original or creative. They ARE very very fun but yet, it's a difficult addiction to admit to. I feel the credibility drain away with each daily listen. I discovered they actually sold MILLIONS of copies of their debut album. What? Seriously? They headline ARENAS. Apparently I saw them about 5 years ago in a small former strip club when they were this band with a hometown friend of theirs and about 30 others. What I remember of that 1) I nearly bought their single because they just got dropped and I felt bad for them 2) they were neither awful nor great. 3) the singer was a bit taller then me.
So go on Kaiser Chiefs- There really are second acts.

In an effort to stop listening to them, but not really, I found this. I'd jump up and down to this a lot if I were so inclined.

I love that there are still random little known bands just ticking by that can stilll get me all psyched and interested. They don't come with any hipster accolades or remixes. Doesn't look like any A&R brats are chasing them down. To be honest I don't know much about Superimposers . Two guys originally from Devon, now in London. They self released several 7"'s and then a singles collection that Boom Kat ("the aural equivalent of Ketamine-laced Rainbowdrops"!) and Rough Trade seemed to like. They're a bit Byrds, a bit Beatles.. a dash of Doves, maybe some Teenage Fanclub. Real good lazy melodies.. I hear it was all summer in London this weekend. This will go down a treat.

I was listening to Humphrey Lyttelton's show on Radio 2 earlier. He'll be 86 I think this May. He's Giving up the radio show to concentrate more on his band. I don't know why, perhaps in awe, but it made me pour a glass of red wine and listen to this. A song to remind you of the carnal musicality built into us all. It's long, not all of it works, and it's not everyone's cup of tea. Occasionally, not every listen, I feel like I just heard a small slice of heaven. Like hot apple crumble and ice cream.

Sounds of the Children of Men

I finally got around to seeing Children of Men. I'd had my eye on it since i spotted the trailer but a dark tale of apocolyptic doom, didn't seem the best option on many sunny days. Until last weekend. It IS dark, harsh, intense etc... but amazingly well shot, framed and acted.. I think a good movie makes you think long after you've walked out of the theatre and since I still haven't made up my mind about this one, it defaults right back to 'good'.
I'd had the soundtrack awhile before I saw the film. These days films like this seem to go to either the 'over produced score' route or the 'quick mix tape' route. This one has everything from Jarvis and the Libertines to a Junior Parker version of 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. Here's a few tracks from Hyperdub Records records that were used on the soundtrack and film (always a bonus) Never dived two deep into the London dubstep thing but love these.

Yes! 4 Hero are back! They never went away really. Just seems they take ages to put out new albums. It's funny yesterday I was just thinking how much I felt like listening to Inner City Life by Goldie. Total landmark track that goes hand in hand with the first couple of 4Hero albums.
Check the the playback of Benji B's show on BBC 1Extra. It's a 4 Hero special. Marc Mac and Dego are interviewed (and claim they'd pick football over music anyday) and plays lots of tracks from the new album. (and you can hear my shout out- I won a signed album!)

My grandad, bless him, is busily entering the digital age. He is nearly 87 now and has a mobile phone, he watches DVDs having skipped the VHS age (perhaps he preferred Betamax), he chats on skype with upside down rellies using a bluetooth headset. He's so embraced the digital revolution he asked me if I would "put" an old Pavarotti compilation 12" onto a CD so he can listen to it with the wireless sennheisers he has which let him do the garden while listening untethered.

Nana would have been bemused but unsurprised if she were still here, he used to be an aircraft/hovercraft designer after all.

While cleaning up the dustly old record, I dug through a few more bits and bobs to pass the while and came across this, intrigued by the cover I stuck it on and continued to leaf through. The first track had me transfixed, and left Can't Get Enough by Barry White (RIP) swinging gently between thumb and forefinger. The liner notes are written by him and describe in a diary like fashion the route to this LP via a permanently blinding dynamite cap accident at his dads farm in wyoming, to the streets of NYC. I could go on, but the internet is probably brimming with more than I have time to spare.

I'm sure this is chip paper to you all, but here's that first track, still sounding fresh, and one other from later in the album; as sampled by Mr scruff. Didn't see that one coming!

Writing about GP got me thinking of my other favorite DJ's. Since the folks at Other Music turned me onto his first couple of mixes I've been a huge fan of DJ Lanuage. (or Prince Language as he goes by sometimes) He's from Chicago but calls NY home. After loving the mix CD's, seeing him at Negroclash at APT (his old regular along with the Tribeca Grand and perhaps still Hotel QT .. can't find to much info on that) for the first time was a happy dancing blur of disco, funk, chaka khan, Feist remixes and some Fela. His style is uniquely New York. It's the music equivlent of those first few warm days in April, staying up late, excited that it's over 50 degrees, "margarita to go" cup in hand as you pass the basketball courts. (except for this year when New York decided to skip winter)

I've had a quiet low lying love for Gilles Peterson for years and years. It probably started when I was 15 and for certain the only person in my southern Maine high school with a passion for 'acid jazz'. I grew up, but not enough to stop me from hanging the Rankin photo of Gilles on my pinboard in my New York office 10 years later. The years tick on by but Gilles just stays Gilles. I was listening to his All Winners show on the radio last week and realized he's never strayed from his tastes but still manages to find music that makes you go 'i LOVE this'. He's a super jazz geek, but he was the first person to play the new Snoop and brings a palpable enthusiasm to his interviews with old Brazilian legends. It's all over the place and all good. He's the little human incarnation of Radio Nova with very little ego and a relatively low profile. From this small place in a quiet blog, I salute you Gilles.

Hello tapeclub!!

been a while, partly I guess due to the reduction of my broadband connection to sub dialup speeds for a couple of months - BT we love you - Anyway, as usual, I'm always lurking in the trees, checking the tunes, collecting up stuff I figure will be of interest to you all. Today I watched The Killing Fields for the first time. And despite being filmed in Thailand not cambodia (like most films about Vietnam also) it compelled me to relisten to some of the audio recordings I made there when I visited. The audio always brought back the memories the smells the heat so much more than any of my pictures ever did (see above). I thought I'd webify them and share them, if you like them maybe I'll post afew more. This first one is more relevant to tapeclub as I heard some music floating through the trees, probably quite unwisely for a country with such a huge landmine problem, I pressed record, gripped my flipflops with my toes and headed off into the jungle. I figured at least if I did get nailed, something like "The Hustle" by Van McCoy & The Soul City Symphony would be playing in the film version as I floated away... thinking about that made me smile.

I just wanted to throw up this "holiday" mix for all your parties this week. I can say that this was road tested at an actual Christmas party (yeah we were all white wasps/catholics who didn't quite know what, exactly Kwanza was) and it went down a treat. Even after the fourth play all the way through. People (me?) even started singing along to the 'kwanza kwanza...' song. And it was totally to do with how great the mix was and not the 4 pots of mulled wine that was drunk.

The LA Weekly ran a rather lengthy feature on the music scene in my neighborhood of Silver Lake, Los Angeles this week. While it's nice to see the bands get coverage, check the tone set but this opening paragraph.

"A decidedly stalkable Annie Hardy leans against the front of the Echo, on Sunset near Glendale Boulevard, amid a meandering parade of 50 or so youthful thrift-store-fashion aficionados. A petite and pasty little party cookie, she reads 15 and trailer-park slutty to the naked eye, but is actually 25 and Silver Lake savvy. She lights a cigarette, looks like she may have had a drink or two, and effects a flat-line veneer, but her darting eyes are a dead giveaway. She’s absolutely engaged. Networking. Eastside style. "

So a 50 yr old male journalist starts a feature on a neighborhood full of bands by calling the lead singer from one of it's leading lights, Giant Drag, a "pasty little party cookie"? Normally I'm not the type to start climbing up high on the soapbox to wave the flag for feminism. But is that not a bit, well,... gross to you? The article goes to mention their actual music precisely, zero, times.
As the subtitle states the pieces discusses, "old-school heads to prepubescent punks, Silver Lake is where L.A.’s indie rock heart still beats". It did a serviceable enough job of doing that, but this being an incredibly exciting, young and artisitic neighborhood, it would have been nice to read about some bands that didn't obsessivly listen to Ride in high school. Hip hop? jazz? It's all here. 'Where LA's musical heart beat' would have been more appropriate.

At least reading this reminded me that I've been meaning to stroll over to Sea Level to pick up the Sea Wolf EP. Their web site will tell you that their are approximetly 10 "sometimes" members of this band. From what I can tell it's a mish mash of Irving, Earlimart and Patrick Park. I love their EP of 5 beautiful songs with a hand stamped cover. And you don't even have to feel guilty about downloading these two songs from it. The band provide the links straight from their website.

Friday night, I headed to the Little Radio warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. Now, it was one of those parties with multiple sponsers that you have to RSVP for. (so the aforementioned sponsers can snag your email address and invite you to more parties) Usually I get lots of emails for this kind of thing. But, this one I found out about the evening of. It was a Puma/Fader/Heineken thing. My newfound love for Professor Murder was such that we decided to throw caution to the grimy downtown wind and head down to 'talk our way in'. Well looks pretty much, um NO ONE, else had that idea. Personally I think I could of got more people down there then the magazine and 'major' brands did. I mean seriously open bar and 'buzz' band equals 100 people?! In the end it didn't really matter. Fun was had, dancing was done, beer was drunk, new friends were made. And even though they couldn't even half fill the place, The Fader managed to get 3 photographers (seriously it was silly) on the scene and post the entire show on their blog the next day.

Podcasts save me every day on the often unfun traffic filled drive to and from work. I subscribe to loads and set them on random. This one has been coming up a lot lately. It's called Slash Music and it's part of Channel 4's new(ish) attempt at setting up a music site. The draw is that it's hosted by Tom Ravenscroft aka John Peel's son. I know it must not be easy following your fathers foot steps when he was one of, if not the, best loved DJ in UK history. But, it's clear he loves music and is good at the chatter so why not. He def has his fathers taste for ... well everything. Pop, ragga, super weird electronic. It's almost all unsigned so you get to hear a lot of things you've never even heard OF, nevermind heard.
Last time I listened a band called The Sleeping Years caught my ears. (is that a saying? caught ears?...anyway) First thought was they reminded me of a non goth acoustic Placebo. You can read more about them (really a him, who was formerlly in the band Catchers) here

It's Mixtape Thursday evening!! He's a mix by James from Bristol. James and I have many mutual friends but somehow have never met. Through the magic fairy dust of the internet we got in touch (check it out he resembles a rather jaunty trilby) He holds it down every Sunday at a lovely little place in a cute corner of the ville called Bristol. I'd really reccomend Bristol on your next UK jaunt. Its cozy there. Cozy in a near Wales, with good music and shops kind of way. After hearing this I really think we need to DJ together sometime. I def have a serious magazine fixation. I'm not sure how big the Jane/Economist crossover is, but I subscribe to both and too many others. I don't often read one cover to cover but I did that with Fader today. It reminds of when i use to find zines in high school and go mail order the records that were reviewed. At my job i have the small pleasure of recieving many a free complication CD in the mail. Usually they come with magazines. So here we have our little theme for this post. My favorite selections from the most recent compilations from Fader (the Cornerstone Mixtape), Vice (which only seems to come to subscribers these days) and Paste (kind a of US version of Word meets Mojo... pretty damn good actually)

First up is a track from the Rhymefest album. I don't know, a lot of press and hype seemed to pass him by when this album came out. Hope he gets his due -it's damn fine album, more street then Lupe but maybe not "street" enough to catch the hype. Who knows.. here's a funny one for you

And last but not least was a happy surprise from the Paste compilation. A track from the new Greg Graffin solo album. I loved Bad Religion in high school and Greg's voice was a big part of it. I'd heard he'd done a solo album of 'traditional American music' and really didn't care to investigate. However, this track w/ Jolie Holland really impressed. Turns out he grew up in the semi-rural midwest singing these kinds of songs with his family growing up. Ah- i was quick to judge yet again.. shame on me.. check it! (and totally wipe from your memory '21st Century Digital Boy' as you listen)

My only excuse is I've been cycling around a lot this summer, and it's been keeping me so entertained I thought I'd share some of the songs I've enjoyed while gently pedalling around the city.

1. Yves Montand - La bicyclette
Like a male Edith Piaf, makes me feel all sixties and Jean Paul Belmondo ish except not as good looking and with a few less cigarettes.

2. Frank Zappa - Franks Bicycle
This is amazing! I love it not only is it before frank was much much more well known, but it has this quite surreal freaky quality. Very funny.

3. Muddy Waters - Smokestack Lightnin'
What can I say about this that hasn't been. I like the way it glamourises in my head scrubby bits of town. makes them seem all good.

4. Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride
OOofff. Good for a bit of a punch to get you past those bendy busses as they decide to pull away from the stop without checking their mirrors.

5. Roxy Music - Virginia Plain
Start at the top of primrose hill to this, fly past the zoo and head down portland street. Brian eno's crazy noises pushing you along.

6. Be Your Own PET - bicycle bicycle you are my bicycle
Haa ha ha! BLAM battling the commuters, who take it OH SO Seriously : )

7. The Roots - Don't Feel Right
Waiting at traffic lights, cabbies pushing up into your area.

Haven't listened to this properly, but seems like a winner to me.

Great start your trip tune... or for blaring out of speakers in a nicked tescos hand basket attached to the back.

Heavy northern soul instrumental... just about the right pace, one thats good for when you have to keep on going even though you'd rather stop for a pint.

I got this in the mail this morning from InSound They are starting up some new Mp3 a day in your email mailing list and this was the first one. I think most people think of Insound as so indie the staff must still be all wearing ringer t's. Maybe that's what they picked such a keyboard heavy first track.. buck the system and all. I keep thining of good little clusters of songs to put up here, then I stumble across one track that I love so much or have forgotten (or usually both) about and the whole plan gets delayed again. When i lived in NYC in the late 90's-'01 years there were a whole lot of bands that lived in my neighborhood. These days it's hearing those bands that evoke my time living there more then anything else could. Luna and the Strokes are the first ones that come to mind. They walked the same streets, drank in the same bars, generally just hung around the same places I did. I believe any band signed to Matador in the 90's was contractually obligated to drink at Max Fish at least once a week. I had completely forgotten about their existence until today but White Hassle was another one of those bands. They were Marcellus Hall and Dave Varanka from Railroad Jerk and I think someone from Skeleton Key. They never caused a huge stir but they ticked along just fine in New York and toured Europe. They are now "on hiatus" and probably would have been sooner had it not been for Isacc Brock from Modest Mouse. He tatooed the name of this song on his own forearm. When 'Float On' was being played everywhere from Vh1 to my local gas station he told every journalist that would listen that this was the song that helped pull him out of a depression . Shortly after he asked them to play the first American All Tomorrow's Parties that he curated. I'll leave it to Issac to sum it up better then I could.. "When I heard it, I thought, 'This is nice. This is actually an unsarcastically positive song.' I was like, 'Let's fuck this doom-and- gloom bullshit.' It was a really good thing to get reminded of, you know? I made up my mind that things were going to be better."

I'd been "brewing" a new post for a while, which really meant I was doing other things like being lazy cycling around on "Carmen" swimming in toxic algae and not really brewing anything other than cups of rooibos. Thanks to Grumble & Twitchy kitty got sprayed with the garden hose, so without further ado:

1: Nancy Holloway - Hurts So Bad
I think I might have posted a Nancy tune called "Sand and Rain" before, possibly while drunk, I love that tune, and decided to have a hunt around, this is what turned up. Just love the hit of the real horns. She did some pretty fun stuff in french too by the way; one is a version of "My Guy" called "Bye Bye" worth checking for a bouncy smile

2: Junior Mance - Don't Cha Hear Me Calling To Ya
I've always been a massive fan Ramsey Lewis/Young Holt/Les McCann hard bop soul jazz stuff, but had never picked up any Junior Mance before until this turned up, there's a couple of well used samples in there too.

3: Oh No - Keep Tryin' Feat. Roc C & Aloe Blacc
Was listening to the Stones Throw Podcast (well worth picking up) by Oh No where he twiddles up some old Galt MacDermot stuff, I like this one, it's the rolling bass makes me feel a bit fuzzy, like being wrapped in cotton wool at a big band stand in a park while big men shout in your ears.

4: Back 4 You - Jurassic 5
I know, i know... it's been swinging around for a while, and yes they've become the Hip Hop equivalent of Stadium Rock, but DAMN put yaw hands in the air!

5: Worla Hurt - Bugz In The Attic
I remember seeing Bugz in the Attic at Plastic People and hearing their remixes played out over the silly good system they have in there. Made my stomach rumble, but never made my ears ring. This one's a bit calmer, but the hefty production, the strings, BLAM.

6: Love Version - Derrick Harriot
This song reminds me of driving through tunnels, repetitive lights, muffled noises... then the darkness opens up and you're away... free.

7: Jesus Walks - Kanye West
I watched Dave Chappelle's Block Party the other night, I'd wondered how Kanye got the idea to dress up as a martching band leader with Jamie Foxx... Now I know. Worth seeing for the Mos Def/Chappelle joke session. Isn't this in Jarhead too? Good for busy streets.

Poor old Tapeclub - he has been a little neglected of late - is it the summer? lack of tunes that we all love and need to share? Well at times like this I think its only right to pull out the big guns and give Tapeclub perhaps the best song in the world ever. Now I know thats a bold claim and anyone who knows me or has been checking Stupid Hat recently will know that practically every other day I find 'the best song in the world' but there really is something about Calexico and especially Quattro. More than any other song that I've listened too it really gets me and quite often when I'm listening to them I think 'is this really the most perfect music in the world?'. This song and also Calexico have so many influences and sounds that I think they definetly come close to being perfect - I've played this tune when I've been down and I've DJ'd it when I've been on top of the world - wherever you are or however you're feeling it just seems to make everything better. So here you are Tapeclub - I hope you'll forgive me for being so slack.

Seems like with Blog On the Motor Way and the burgeoning empire that is Upsidedown Stupid Hat everyone has forgot about 'lil old OG TapeClub. Well - its a slow Friday and i haven't!
I heard this song for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It's from Lady and Bird who are Bardi Johannsson from Iceland and Keren Ann who had her own little thing going on. Especially w/ her French/Israeli who's in love with New York vibe. I don't know much musically about Johannsson but his bio says he was the producer of Iceland's first erotic television program. Lovely! This album was released in America about 2 months ago on Keren's own label Yellow Tangerine. It includes a cover of Suicide is Painless (aka the theme from MASH) but I think this track is the true gem. I've seen the album described as a childrens story for grown ups and that's what this track sounds like. It's cute, precious and a little sad.

Anyway speaking of the Mini Apple I chanced upon some Jayhawks in my pod recently. Now i have hundreds and hundreds of CD's in storage. I would bet most are from '94-'97 when i was a college radio music director and the independent music world was my free swag oyster. Lots of random things that i grew to love came my way and one was the 'Tomorrow The Green Grass' album by the Jayhawks. I guess a lot of people say 'Hollywood Town Hall' was their master piece but no one ever gave that to me free in exchange for air play so i wouldn't know.
The band has been around for 20 years and been through lots of line up changes. You can read more about it here if you care to. The core has always ben Mark Olson and Gary Louris. They have been touring this past year together for the first time in 10 years. As an acoustic duo at that! Something I would have loved to see. Apparently they were not even talking much nevermind writing and playing. But after 9/11 Mark called Gary up, they got back in touch and now we not only have a tour but a new album on the way. Thanks terrorists!
I think 'I'd Run Away With You' is one of the prettiest songs I've heard. Here's an acoustic version w/ just Mark and Gary. The other track is from the No Depression favorite Hollywood Town Hall album.

He's the fucking man, one of my favorite tunes ever ever ever is Listen Love by Jon Lucien. Dayums. I can't believe these two are covering this tune but its fucking butter, fucking golden. The Ray Charles tune is nice but I think I prefer the Nina Simone version where she sings bad french. I found this Scruff mix while looking for the Top Billin Mix but it wasn't on their site just on some index so maybe we got a scoop. Oh and Ratatat have a new album out and this is my fave remix of theirs from that mixtape they did around the time the last album came out. By Far one of my favorite tracks in the last couple of years. Tellier is a French Pop recluse who recently released a Sessions album in which he re-recorded this hit. In 2005 NME said this track is bound to be a "huge club hit." Nothing like a 4 minute intro. This song is sexy as hell.

Gee, another Alkan track will do. Mr. Alkan is fast becoming one of my favorite producers these days, as I find his newer material more accesible.

I heard these guys being played on the aforementioned KEXP. Apparently they were playing some Seattle block party that night. The singer/songwriter is 20 who started writing songs a year ago. The band has played about 15 shows total. Jigga wha? They are so good. It's kind of Shins-y, Rufus, Belle and Sebastian ish all together.. Upon futher investigation I found out these songs were mixed by Phil Eck (who produced The Shins and Built To Spill) so that's why they sound so glossy and nice for a bands demo. Well have a listen.. I'm sure they'll have a record deal in no time if that's what they want. (Perfik get in there!)

I finally got my Pod working in the car again so had lots to catch up on. Namely 20 odd KEXP 'song of the day' tracks. I like to tune in at work sometimes. It's pretty 'i have 2 kids and a Volkswagen but still like good music' but their hearts in the right place. They are heavy on the indie rock but this track was the song of the day a couple weeks back. It's not breaking any new ground but it's all perky and warm and bubbly. Could fit right in w/ some Mr Scruff. Bonus points for being from Chile!

Happy Time! Well I had planned to pull out my cuts and post up some battle tunes for the boys but I got sidetracked by this Fourtet Mix that I bought a while ago in Manchester. Its soooooooo good. Plenty of Madvillian, some band called Left Banke and the end with Nas over God Speed You! - jesu.

..i had to share it. Does anyone remember this song? I actually do but had no idea it was this... weird. I mean it would be perfect if Tigerheat or G.A.Y or one of those McDonalds of gay club nights needed a indie soccer theme. That being said, it's so strange I have to like it. It's kind of fun to imagine Becks doing jumping jacks to this before practice.. in fact imagine exactly that as you listen. It's twice as funny.
I think Air Miami were the 'electronic leaning' project of that guy Mark something or other who owned Teen Beat records. One of those twee-er then twee 90's indie labels.

So I'd planned to post a bunch of classic summer tunes but in the time it took me to gather a bunch together I realized that I had a fresh crop for summer 06. Lots of the songs speak for themselves suffice to say the Justice tune should be the first tune you listen to each day. Ratatat have a new album out which I'm super excited about yayayayayayay. The Money Fight appear to be one of the dudes from Her Space and his mate. You know I love a good ridiculous genre name - well make way for Joanna Newsom Reggaeton. The Assman track is one of those that speaks for itself. I've never dug the T.P, ever. The vocals, the songwriting, the jangly guitar...always seemed super lame, justifying once again the subjective nature of music. It was to my suprise, then, when a T.P. cut saved me during a rough week last week (outside of Band of Horses "Funeral" - not as literal). I totally related - not so lame. Go figure.

So one Dr Thunderpants who resides here got quite excited about the line up of Austin City Limits festival when it was announced last week. I wasn't as quite as enthusiatic mainly bcause of such musical horrors as String Cheese Incident and Guster. (it hurt to even type the names) But then i notcied for every hippie jam band there was 2 good bands. The Stills! Shins! Massive Attack! Phoenix! Now i'm not going to travel for it but if I found myself in Austin in September I'm sure I'd have a damn good time. But, this was not enough to sway our friend Nix. No, no she said it was to hippy and the final nail in the coffin for her was the headliner Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I was aghast and asked if she'd listened to Refugee lately. Instead she claimed it was not her steez (her slang.. even though I think the great T Petty is beyond slang and styles for that matter) So I'm sorry there will be no zip files of lo-fi 7" geek rock, no nu-grime from the bowels of Hackney. Just my 2 favorite songs by the great Tom Petty. He's an ugly, weird, low key version of Bruce Springsteen who has been doing this since 1976. How can you not love it Nix???

Sometimes I just sit at home in my plain white T and my diary out - and I just weep. Then I put on my chucks (limited edition of course) and ride of my vespa over to my local record store and cry all over those records.
11. Letting Up Despite Great Faults - If You're Here Today - Good song. Cooler band name.
12. 13 Monk & James Murphy - Kick out the Chairs - Normally I would stay away from Mr. Murphy - after seeing him live my brain has a disturbing etched picture of him on it - but this song seems like wednesday. Kick out the chair bitches!

14. Suf-jan - The Avalanche - A nice b-side from Illinois. I like this song. He's a tough one not to enjoy in some manner. His indie cred is similar to the wealth of Donald Trump. That bothers me.

A few days ago Grant McLennan from the Go Betweens died. Seems this news was greated by sympathtic indifference by most people I know. I'm def not a life long super fan or anything but the Go Betweens did write lovely little songs in a old Crowded House, REMish kind of way. I've always liked this song a lot. So I've been hanging out in the states a bunch recently and one thing that has been on my mind is the fact that you can't drink in public - well in true UK style I found a way round it in the name of 'Subway Cup Filled with Beer on the Beach' all hail the neu messiah.

So anyway I've had a million posts in my head recently and I've decided the only way to get round it is to post all the tunes in three big ZIP files. Its like tapeclub Xmas or Lucky Dip.

Tapey 1 - Some of my most favorite new artists, Ayentee, Beirut, some old choir covering the Kaiser Chiefs and the new Dabrye tune with MF Doom. NIIIIICE! Also on of my fave non english speaking song Akira's Coal Mining Song - Japanese Big Band anyone? tapey 1

Tapey 2 - again another new fave of mine the Klaxons but this tapey is much more classic, London Funk Allstars, Kid Loco (that sexy tune) Patti Smith, that Lou Reed tune from The Squid and the Whale, another Doom appearence and some old foreign business. tapey 2

Tapey 3 - this tapey is a little bit more 'Urban' than the others, Pimp C and the Purple Ribbon Allstars, you know its summer when we roll out the Red Rat, another secret Doom appearence and some more foreign language music. Oh and also one of my favorite Tim Buckey tunes. tapey 3

I hope you guys enjoy these tunes and I hope they don't get lost as some big ass folder on your ipod - please enjoy and walk around the city you live in listening to them or at the very least stumble home on the tube drunk and let them carry you home.

I took a walk in the sunshine today, and armed only with my trusty telephone, took a few snaps to document the journey from Kingsland Road to sunny Kennington.

Anyway, while shuffling along, the pod hit a couple of old tunes in a row which made me feel the spring and eagerly await the summer. Sometimes it gets it so right.

So it feels like eons since my last post, back then I was into 'urban' music and into hanging out on the street with my crew and setting fire to bins and stuff, happy slapping grannies. Anyway I've matured a lot since then, I only drink red wine nowadays and probably only 1 glass down the gastro pub with my chums. I went for a walk with The Boy Detective yesterday and we took some photos which you can check here. It was probably about 10 miles all in and for those of you who don't live in the UK this is what happens on a bank holiday weekend. Anyway like I said I've grown up and and with it my musical tastes have matured and so now I only listen to heart wrenching soul music or people with guitars - its because I sensitive see.

I've never heard this Nina track before but it is now my super favorite track of hers. Bettye Swann is also new to me but I was listening to this song as I sat on the floor of the train going home to see my folks (the train was like some cattle truck and there were no seats) and I almost cried its so beautiful. The Crazy cover is just amazing.

F-14's back from dodging Maoists, sneaking through Army checkpoints, escaping burning fires, rampaging elephants, wilfully chucking himself off mountains attached to a big kite-fabric duvet, and other over elaborated events.

Still being back and unemployed is no fun.

I just got back from Bristol where there was a slew of violence to a jungle soundtrack-nothing like a bit of context!
Anyway if ound this girl on myspace (natch) a year or so ago and now she's releasing this tune on I Can Count records, a new label based in Sheffield, UK
She's a young music stude with a healthy interest in grime and electronics but with a soulful bent-check it aaaaaaat (as far as I'm aware she's solely on production rather than vocals)
